“I wish I had purpose like you, you dumb bitch!,” Awkwafina tells her friend in the first trailer for “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.” The “Farewell” star plays herself in the Comedy Central series, which is inspired by her own young adult years living in Queens.
Nora is living at home with her dad (BD Wong, “Mr. Robot”) and grandmother (Lori Tan Chinn, “Orange Is the New Black”), and feels stuck. “Man, your parents got you on trash duty too?” she asks her teen neighbor as they’re taking out the garbage. “Aren’t you, like, 27?” he replies.
Nora realizes she needs to make a change, but it’s easier said than done. She’s a terrible driver, which makes her ride-share job challenging, and she has to go to her cousin for her Social (“A lot of people don’t know their Social Security numbers,” she insists). However, she’s determined to be successful, even if she hasn’t figured out her path or purpose just yet. “If I can make it work, anyone can make it work,” Nora declares.
Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, put together an all-women writers’ room for “Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.” She also created and exec produces the show. Natasha Lyonne, Jamie Babbit (“But I’m a Cheerleader”), Lucia Aniello (“Rough Night”), and Anu Valia (“The Other Two”) are among the first season’s directors.
Awkwafina portrayed Billi, a young woman saying goodbye to her terminally ill grandmother under the guise of a family wedding, in Lulu Wang’s awards contender “The Farewell.” “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Ocean’s Eight” are among her other credits. Her upcoming projects include crime thriller “Breaking News In Yuba County” and Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of Broadway musical “The Prom.”
“Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens” premieres January 22 on Comedy Central.
