“You think I’ve ever gotten what I wanted?” asks Alicia von Rittberg in a new trailer for “Becoming Elizabeth.” The upcoming Starz historical drama centers on the early life of Elizabeth I (Rittberg), an orphaned teenager who finds herself embroiled in all the drama of the English court as she fights to secure the crown. A forbidden romance and clashes with her nine-year-old brother, Edward (Oliver Zetterström), the newly crowned king of England, have Elizabeth plotting to make her own destiny.
Elizabeth seems to take one piece of advice in particular to heart. “It’s not the lion who hunts. It is the lioness,” she’s told. Warned that others will always “seek to use” her family and aware that the world “wants them at odds,” Elizabeth is doing her best not to be a pawn in anyone’s else’s game.
“Genius: Einstein,” “Our Kind of Traitor,” and “Fury” are among Rittberg’s credits.
Anya Reiss, a playwright whose screen credits include “EastEnders,” created “Becoming Elizabeth” and penned the series.
“Becoming Elizabeth” debuts on Starz June 12.
