In the summer of 1985, “Black-ish” matriarch Rainbow Johnson was 12 years old and living on a commune with her parents and two younger siblings. It was an idyllic, welcoming environment and Bow (Arica Himmel) was blissfully unaware of current events, including Reagan, AIDS, and world hunger. “I would’ve told you it was perfect,” adult Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross) narrates in the trailer for “Black-ish” spinoff “Mixed-ish.”
But then the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) shut down the commune — or what they called “a radicalized cult” — because of its numerous ATF violations. Suddenly, Bow, her black mother (Tika Sumpter), white father (Anders Holm), and brother (Ethan William Childress) and sister (Mykal-Michelle Harris) are forced back into the mainstream world, complete with a gun-loving grandpa (Gary Cole) and cruel classmates.
Not only is young Bow unprepared for the trials of school, she has no clue how the world perceives someone who is seen as neither black nor white. When a boy asks her and her siblings, “What are you weirdos mixed with?”, she doesn’t know what he’s talking about. “My parents had sent us out into the world with absolutely no warning that being mixed was even a thing,” adult Bow recalls. “Imagine being the new kid when no one in the world is like you.”
“Black-ish’s” fifth season finale will air May 21 on ABC. The sitcom previously spun off “Grown-ish,” a Freeform series about eldest Johnson daughter Zoey’s adventures in college. “Grown-ish’s” second season will return June 5.
“Mixed-ish” is coming soon to ABC, but there’s no official premiere date yet.
