Marvel universe fixture Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) provides a helpful primer on the two alien races at war in a new trailer for “Captain Marvel.” “Skrulls are the bad guys,” he tells Carol Danvers (Brie Larson). “You’re a Kree — a race of noble warriors.” “Heroes,” she adds with a smile. “Noble warrior heroes.”
Convinced that something in her past is the key to understanding what’s going on, Carol is struggling to make sense of her limited memories. We’re told that her “life began the day it nearly ended.” She was found with no memory and made to be Kree so she could “love longer, stronger, superior.” But now she’s starting to remember her previous life, one in which she trained to be a soldier.
Larson won an Oscar in 2016 for “Room,” an adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel of the same name. Her recent credits include “The Glass Castle” and “Kong: Skull Island.” Among her upcoming projects is Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” a drama about a woman trying to figure out how to break up with her boyfriend.
The “Short Term 12” actress made her feature directorial debut with “Unicorn Store,” a coming-of-age comedy about an art student who is obsessed with unicorns. The pic premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
“Captain Marvel” marks the first female-led film in the Marvel franchise, and the first to be helmed by a woman. Anna Boden co-directed the pic with Ryan Fleck. “Mississippi Grind” and “Half Nelson” are among the collaborators’ previous credits.
“On the ‘Captain Marvel’ press tour, I’ll be pushing for representation across the board: my interviews, magazine covers, the clothes that I’m wearing,” Larson, a vocal #TimesUp supporter, recently promised. “It means spending more time thinking about things than you sometimes want to, but it’s worth it.”
“Captain Marvel” arrives March 8. Check out the trailer to see Carol refuse to fight someone else’s war.
