“War is a universal language, and I know a renegade solider when I see one,” says Marvel universe fixture Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in the first trailer for “Captain Marvel.” “Never occurred to me that one might come from above,” he adds.
Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) is, as Nick suspects, “not from around here.” But by her own account, it’s “hard to explain” where she is from. Set in the ’90s, “Captain Marvel” sees Carol landing on earth from the sky and trying to figure out what happened beforehand.
“I keep having these memories,” Carol reveals. “I see flashes. I think I had a life here. But I can’t tell if its real.” The heroine isn’t sure if the memories — which include training as a soldier — are her own or have been implanted.
As Entertainment Weekly previously revealed,“Captain Marvel” skips the traditional origin-story template: Carol already has her powers when we meet her.
“Captain Marvel” marks the first female-led film in the Marvel franchise, and the first to be helmed by a woman. Anna Boden co-directed the pic with Ryan Fleck. “Mississippi Grind” and “Half Nelson” are among the collaborators’ previous credits.
Larson won an Oscar in 2016 for “Room.” Based on Emma Donoghue’s novel of the same name, the drama tells the story of a woman living in captivity with her son after being kidnapped as a teen. Her recent credits include “The Glass Castle” and “Kong: Skull Island.”
The “Short Term 12” actress made her feature directorial debut with “Unicorn Store,” a coming-of-age comedy about an art student who is obsessed with unicorns. The pic premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
“Captain Marvel” lands March 8.
