Considered “the most exciting thing in the world of architecture” 20 years ago, Bernadette Fox (Cate Blanchett) has long since lost her mojo — or buried it. A trailer for “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” sees her re-discovering her talent and her own identity.
“I think what happened to my mom is she got so focused on her family she forgot about herself,” Bernadette’s daughter (Emma Nelson) observes. Sleep deprived and wasting her time engaging in petty warfare with a neighbor, Bernadette is told that people like her “must create.” So when the opportunity to take on a huge project in Antarctica presents itself, Bernadette slips out the window and vows to get the job done, despite being warned that it will be harder and more time-consuming than she can possibly imagine.
“I have this one shot to launch my second act, so step aside, ‘cuz I’m about to kick the hell out of life,” Bernadette announces.
“The House with a Clock in Its Walls,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “Thor: Ragnarok” are among Blanchett’s recent credits. She won Oscars for her roles in “Blue Jasmine” and “The Aviator” and received nods for “Carol,” “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” “I’m Not There,” “Notes on a Scandal,” and “Elizabeth.” Her upcoming projects include Lucille Ball biopic “Lucy and Desi” and FX’s “Mrs. America,” a limited series about conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly.
Based on Maria Semple’s best-seller of the same name, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” hits theaters August 16. Kristen Wiig, Judy Greer, and Zoe Chao co-star. Holly Gent (“Me and Orson Welles”) co-wrote the script.
