“I am not against women,” says Cate Blanchett in a new trailer for “Mrs. America.” “I am not against women working outside the home. But what I am against is the women’s liberation movement.” The miniseries is based on a true story and sees the two-time Oscar winner playing Phyllis Schlafly, best known for her efforts to thwart the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in the ’70s.
“We want the right to be a mother. The right to be a wife,” Phyllis explains. “The libbers want to create a sex neutral feminist totalitarian nightmare.”
The libbers maintain that the so-called “sweetheart of the silent majority” is perpetuating lies with no basis in fact, but as feminist icon Gloria Steinem (Rose Byrne) acknowledges, “Revolutions are messy.” She and her fellow activists are also dealing with conflict within their own ranks, with some needing to be reminded that they are fighting for the liberation of all women — and that dissenting voices shouldn’t be silenced. Gloria emphasizes, “We are a political movement, not a sorority.”
Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore portray Steinem in “The Glorias,” Julie Taymor’s adaptation of Steinem’s best-selling book “My Life on the Road.” The pic will premiere at Sundance later this month.
“Mrs. America” debuts April 15 on FX on Hulu. Sarah Paulson, Margo Martindale, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, and Tracey Ullman co-star. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (“Captain Marvel”) directed the first two episodes of the drama.
