“You have no idea how far I’ll go,” warns Chloë Grace Moretz in a new trailer for Roseanne Liang’s “Shadow in the Cloud.” Set in WWII, the campy thriller tells the story of Captain Maude Garrett, a flight mechanic and pilot who joins joins the all-male crew of a B-17 bomber with a top-secret package.
“You’re not a pilot. You’re a delivery girl,” Maude is told. As sexist as they are unwelcoming, the crew members also claim that Maude “wouldn’t know how to fire a gun.” Fortunately for them, they’re wrong. It turns out that Maude isn’t the only unexpected passenger on the flight — she discovers an evil presence determined to wreak havoc and amass a body count. From the looks of the trailer, Maude is not only capable of firing a gun but the only person aboard with any chance of taking the gremlin down.
“I think different people will take different things from the film. If they leave the film feeling like they’ve been on a thrill ride, brilliant. If they leave the film wanting to know more about the history, amazing,” Liang told us. “For me, the film makes me think about people’s capacity for strength and courage in the face of adversity — not in a cheesy way, but in an imperfect way. I think all humans — especially in these times — are dealing with varying degrees of adversity every day. Sometimes the adversity is huge, sometimes it’s a series of small stings that adds up to a systemic adversity. How we deal, adapt, survive, and maybe evolve in these circumstances is fascinating to me.”
Liang’s credits include the 2011 feature “My Wedding and Other Secrets” and the 2017 short “Do No Harm.”
“Greta,” “Suspiria,” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” are among Moretz’s recent credits.
“Shadow in the Cloud” made its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Co-written by Liang, the pic hits select theaters, VOD, and digital January 1.
