Set to drop May 3 on Netflix, “Dead to Me” sees Christina Applegate playing Jen, a sardonic widow on a mission. When she’s not denying hugs to new friends or telling a well-meaning neighbor who drops off a casserole to imagine her own husband dying violently and unexpectedly, Jen is taking pictures of cars with “person-sized dents” in their front hoods in the hopes of finding the person who killed her husband in a hit-and-run accident. A new trailer for the dark comedy series shows Jen making a much-needed friend.
After meeting at a support group, Jen takes an unexpected shine to Judy (Linda Cardellini), an optimistic free spirit. The pair bond over their insomnia and shared appreciation for “The Facts of Life.” It’s not long before Jen invites her new BFF to stay in her guest house, a decision that concerns one of her sons. “You don’t even know her,” he objects. And it turns out his suspicions aren’t entirely unfounded. Police officers show up at Jen’s door asking if she knows Judy, and insist that wherever she goes, “chaos follows.” Jen doesn’t seem to mind the chaos, and Judy is the only one who has been there for her since her husband’s death — plus, she realizes that her friend is right when she claims that “grief does some weird shit to people.”
Liz Feldman (“2 Broke Girls,” “One Big Happy”) created “Dead to Me,” and she and Applegate are among its exec producers.
A four-time Emmy nominee, Applegate won for a guest appearance on “Friends.” The “Married with Children” alumna also received nods for her work on “Samantha Who?”
Cardellini, who was last seen in Best Picture winner “Green Book,” scored an Emmy nomination for a guest appearance on “Mad Men.” Her other TV credits include “Freaks and Geeks” and “ER.”
