Edie Falco plays a teacher whose work goes far beyond the classroom in Lynn Shelton’s latest. A trailer has arrived for “Outside In,” a drama that sees the “Nurse Jackie” alumna taking on the role of Carol, a woman who makes a huge impact on a former student’s life. Thanks to years of Carol’s advocacy, Chris (Jay Duplass), who’s serving time, is granted early parole. But that’s just the beginning of the story. “Outside In” looks at what happens after his release.
The time and energy Carol has dedicated to Chris’ cause seems like a major source of resentment for her husband (Charles Leggett), who doesn’t hide his feelings about her bringing her “charity work home.” Their teen daughter (Kaitlyn Dever), however, takes a shine to Chris, and seemingly develops a crush on the 38-year-old.
Carol and Chris have an intimate bond, and it’s not long before boundaries start blurring and disappearing entirely. “I just want a simple life. Come home every day to somebody that I love and be good to them,” he tells Carol. “I want you.”
Shelton’s feature credits include “Laggies,” “Your Sister’s Sister,” and “Humpday.” In recent years she’s been doing a lot of TV directing on series such as “Fresh Off the Boat,” “GLOW,” “The Good Place,” “Shameless,” “Master of None,” and “The Mindy Project.”
Falco is a four-time Emmy winner. She took home trophies for her roles in “Nurse Jackie” and “The Sopranos.”
“Outside In” made its world premiere at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival to strong reviews. Shelton penned the script with Duplass. You can catch the pic in select theaters on March 30 and on VOD April 3.
