A trailer has arrived for Amy Berg’s psychological thriller “Every Secret Thing,” starring Elizabeth Banks, Diane Lane, Dakota Fanning and Danielle Macdonald (“2 Broke Girls”).
The film focuses on a detective (Banks) who is “haunted by her failure to save the life of a missing child from the hands of two young girls. Eight years later, another child goes missing in the same town just days after Ronnie and Alice (Fanning and Macdonald), the two girls convicted of the former crime, were released from juvenile detention,” according to the PR description. Lane plays Alice’s mother.
This spot for “Every Secret Thing” begins with a glimpse into the past. We see Ronnie and Alice as young girls, the former instigating the crime that sent them away. When the first seconds of a trailer include a terrifying child abduction, you know it’s going to be a dark and disturbing movie. As the trailer goes on, we see Banks and fellow police officers race against the clock to figure out what’s happened to the newly missing three-year-old and how to save her from the same fate as the previous missing child, who went missing only three miles away. What looks especially compelling to us about the movie is the friendship — if you can call it that — between Ronnie and Alice. What propelled them to commit this unthinkable crime? And how do they feel about each other in the present? The trailer indicates that the pair have a tense and dysfunctional relationship — unsurprising given the circumstances — and we’re eager to see how their dynamic unfolds onscreen.
Our colleagues at The Playlist praised Berg when the film debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival back in 2014, writing that she “directs the hell out of every segment in the film.” “Every Secret Thing” is Berg’s first narrative feature, but she’s already found huge success as a documentary filmmaker, including an Emmy win and an Oscar nom (the latter for “Deliver Us From Evil”). Nicole Holofcener (“Enough Said”) penned the script.
In an interview with Women and Hollywood, Berg identified the greatest challenge in making the film as achieving “the depth of great characters and [figuring out] how to slim the story down into a simpler narrative, as the script followed six lead characters, and in a thriller, it’s so important to engage emotionally and mentally.”
You can expect to find “Every Single Thing” in theatres and on iTunes on May 15.
