The newest trailer for Mélanie Laurent’s “Galveston” eerily shares what one can only presume is the film’s overarching, psychological conflict. As a disembodied voiceover tells us, “the past isn’t real. You remember it how you want to remember it.”
“Galveston,” which marks Laurent’s English-language directorial debut, follows a framed hitman (Ben Foster, “Hell or High Water”) on the run from his boss. Through a chain of unlikely events, he pairs up with a young woman named Rocky (Elle Fanning), who, as this trailer reveals, is running from personal demons of her own.
“Galveston” is based on “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto’s novel of the same name. The film was picked up by RLJE Films this summer following its SXSW debut. It is currently playing at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival.
Laurent’s directorial credits include “Diving” and “Breathe.” She also won a César Award (France’s Oscar equivalent) for “Demain,” a climate change documentary she co-directed alongside Cyril Dion. Her on-screen credits include “Beginners,” “Now You See Me,” and “Inglourious Basterds.”
Fanning’s recent credits include “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” and Haifaa Al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley,” in which she plays the famed “Frankenstein” author. Next, she’ll star in “Teen Spirit” as a shy teenager determined to break through the pop music scene and as Princess Aurora in Disney’s 2019 “Maleficent” sequel.
“Galveston” arrives in theaters and on VOD October 19.
