Ellen Page and Kate Mara find common ground despite their political differences in a new trailer for “My Days of Mercy.” Tali Shalom-Ezer’s drama sees Lucy (Page), a dedicated activist who has spent years protesting the death penalty outside state penitentiaries, forging an unexpected connection with Mercy (Mara), who has an opposite stance.
For Lucy capital punishment isn’t just a hot-button issue — it’s personal. Her father is an inmate on death row. Convicted of killing Lucy’s mother, he maintains his innocence.
The chemistry between Lucy and Mercy is immediate, but the spot suggests that the two take some time getting to know each other before getting romantically involved. Ultimately, “their strong connection enables them to face and acknowledge their own hidden truths and transforms them both,” Shalom-Ezer told us. She said she hopes audiences “feel that they’re not alone and that there’s always a chance to change, to grow, and to love.”
Page received an Oscar nod in 2007 for “Juno.” “The Umbrella Academy” and “Tallulah” are among her more recent credits. You can catch her next in Netflix’s “Tales of the City” sequel, which hits the streamer June 7.
Mara’s recent credits include “Pose” and “Megan Leavey.”
Shalom-Ezer made her feature debut with 2014’s “Princess.”
“My Days of Mercy” premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival and will open in select theaters and on digital platforms July 5.
