“Is he really alive?” Lyn (Melissa Barrera) asks about her dad in the trailer for “Vida’s” third and final season. She and her sister, Emma (Mishel Prada), have believed him dead for years — but he’s actually alive and well, and lives fairly close by.
Season 3 of the Starz dramedy sees the sisters debating what they should do in light of the shocking revelation. Emma, the more emotionally guarded of the two, is adamant that she’s “not gonna let some deadbeat back in our lives.” But Lyn is torn. “Emma, he’s the only family we have,” she says. “We are the only family we have,” Emma argues.
As Emma and Lyn deal with this mega family drama, they’re also enjoying the spoils of the bar their mother left them — which has become a smash success under Lyn’s tutelage. Emma’s so confident about things that she decides “to fearlessly partake in not giving a shit” and take shrooms at a theme night. “Alright, well, I hope you’re ready for some serious dehydration and an existential crisis,” Lyn tells her.

The news that “Vida” is ending with Season 3 comes as a bit of surprise. There was no word of the series concluding when the third season teaser dropped last month or when Starz renewed the show after Season 2.
“This goodbye is too bittersweet for words. I’d be lying if I said I’m not sad about not getting back into that magical writers room to keep crafting our story. But after all, I got to tell the exact story I wanted to tell, exactly how I wanted to tell it, and that is rare in this industry,” creator Tanya Saracho wrote in a goodbye letter. “I leave steeped in gratitude. Thankful to Starz for not just allowing ‘Vida’ to happen, but for being great co-parents as we raised her together. And grateful for the collaborators whose careers we were able to launch: Latinx cinematographers, writers, actors — almost entirely female — who are now out there and in demand. What a beautiful family we built. And what a beautiful show.”
“Vida” returns April 26. Ser Anzoategui and Roberta Colindrez also star. Per Variety, Season 3 was written and directed entirely by Latina women.
