“There’s no such thing as a perfect astronaut — just like there’s no such thing as a perfect mother,” Eva Green is told in a new trailer for “Proxima.” Alice Winocour’s latest sees the “Penny Dreadful” alumna playing Sarah, a French astronaut training at the European Space Agency in Cologne. Besides being the sole woman in the demanding program, Sarah is also a single mother to seven-year-old Stella.
Chosen to be part of the crew of a year-long space mission, Sarah struggles to balance her professional responsibilities with her sense of duty to Stella. Her male colleagues encourage her to “cut the cord,” but Sarah’s guilt and overpowering love for her daughter are making her dread the liftoff date — and the quarantine that will precede it.
“Augustine” and “Disorder” are among Winocour’s previous credits.
Green’s credits include “Dumbo” and “Casino Royale.” She stars in “The Luminaries,” BBC’s upcoming adaptation of Eleanor Catton’s award-winning novel set during New Zealand’s 19th-century gold rush. Claire McCarthy (“Ophelia”) directs.
“Proxima” made its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and hits theaters in the UK May 8. No word on a U.S. premiere date.
