Trailer Watch: Female Friendships Conquer All in Lifetime’s “Beaches”

“Beaches”: Lifetime

On January 20, 2017, we’ll be living through one of the most disappointing presidential inaugurations in the history of this country, but fortunately the next night we can drown our tears in female friendships. Lifetimes “Beaches” has just released a full new trailer and the power of women couldn’t be more evident.

The 1988 original starred Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as best friends, one a singer and the other a heiress and lawyer. The movie follows them through a 30-year friendship, with Midler singing the film’s iconic songs, such as “Wind Beneath My Wings,” and “The Glory of Love.” Since its premiere, the movie has become a classic among female friends, and a favorite for mother-daughter duos.

Menzel is playing Midler’s role, CC, with Nia Long in Hershey’s role, Hillary. Menzel also recorded additional new songs for this version. Though we don’t get to hear any of the new stuff in this trailer, Menzel’s bit of “Wind Beneath My Wings” is enough to get the tear ducts flowing.

Allison Anders (“Ring of Fire”) directed from a script by Bart Baker and Nikole Beckwith (“Stockholm, Pennsylvania”). “Beaches” was produced by Denise Di Novi (“Crazy Stupid Love”) and Alison Greenspan (“If I Stay”). It premieres January 21 at 8/7c on Lifetime.
