Jane Fonda introduces her friends to Christian Grey in a new trailer for “Book Club.” The comedy sees four friends — played by Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen — forming a book club with “Fifty Shades of Grey” as their first required reading. There are murmurs of protest since the club was intended to “stimulate [their] minds,” but Fonda’s character assures her pals that Christian and Anastasia’s BDSM-inspired romance is said to be “quite stimulating” in its own right.
Reading erotica makes a major impact on the friends. It’s not long before the book is causing candid conversations (“Have you ever been spanked?”) and awkward run-ins with airport security (“This is nasty.”). “Fifty Shades” also seems to inspire them to pursue romances of their own, whether it’s looking for new love online or re-connecting with old flames.
In a business where older women are typically relegated to the sidelines if they are portrayed at all, it’s important to note that all four actresses at the center of “Book Club” are 65+ and their sexuality is at the forefront of the story.
Co-written by Erin Simms, the pic hits theaters May 18.
Fonda currently stars in Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie,” Keaton’s latest gig was HBO’s “The Young Pope,” Bergen is set to reprise her role as a TV reporter in CBS’ “Murphy Brown” reboot, and Steenburgen is a series regular on Fox’s “Last Man on Earth.”
