Trailer Watch: Gurinder Chadha Pays Homage to Bruce Springsteen in “Blinded by the Light”

"Blinded by the Light"

“It’s like Bruce knows everything I’ve ever felt, everything I’ve ever wanted,” says Javed (Viveik Kalra) in a new trailer for “Blinded by the Light.” The British teen of Pakistani descent isn’t referring to a cult leader. At least not technically. He’s worshiping at the throne of Bruce Springsteen. Set in 1987 Luton, England, Gurinder Chadha’s coming-of-age pic sees Javed’s life forever changed after he discovers the Boss’ music.

Convinced that “writing isn’t a job,” Javed’s family is skeptical about his career aspirations as well as his newfound love of Springsteen. He’s convinced that they’re stuck in another century, and Bruce is the only one who really understands him.

“Blinded by the Light” scored the biggest deal out of Sundance this year and received strong reviews. “Human connections around family, hope, and a desire to do something more than is expected of you are universal, and this film shows how music and writing transcend race and religion,” Chadha told us. She added, “‘Bend It Like Beckham’ came out after 9/11 when many people across the world welcomed a joyous, authentic film that brought cultures together. ‘Blinded by the Light’ aims to do just that at a time where many seek political gain through division and hate.”

Best known for directing and co-writing soccer smash “Bend It Like Beckham,” Chadha’s other features include “Bhaji on the Beach” and “Viceroy’s House.”

“Blinded by the Light” hits theaters August 14. The film is inspired by Sarfraz Manzoor’s 2007 memoir “Greetings from Bury Park: Race, Religion and Rock N’ Roll.”
