“I’ve never given myself permission to feel this way,” says Kate Mara in a new trailer for “A Teacher.” When we’re first introduced to Claire (Mara) and Eric (Nick Robinson), the pair seem like a cute couple. When they’re not kissing, embracing, and flirting, they’re making passionate declarations about how this relationship has taken them into unprecedented emotional territory. “I’ve never felt this way before,” says Nick. “It’s new.” It’s only when we see Claire and Eric in the setting in which they first met that the nature of their relationship becomes clear: she’s a high school teacher, and he’s her student.
Claire, who is married to a man eager to “start a family,” is determined to keep her extracurricular activities with Eric a secret. “Listen, you cannot tell anyone about us, ever,” she warns. But the spot reveals that Eric’s classmates discover what’s been going on with Eric and their teacher, and though he’s heralded as a hero, he seems to be traumatized by the experience, which few seem to consider sexual abuse.
“A Teacher” is based on Hannah Fidell’s 2013 drama of the same name. She’s directing and exec producing the series, which will premiere November 10 on FX on Hulu.
“6 Years” and “The Long Dumb Road” are among Fidell’s other features.
Mara received an Emmy nod for “House of Cards.” Her other credits include “Pose,” “Megan Leavey,” and “The Martian.”
