At the end of “Made for Love’s” first season, Hazel Green (Cristin Milioti) was on the verge of finally divorcing her controlling tech CEO husband, Byron Gogol (Billy Magnussen). He had, among other transgressions, kept her isolated at his eponymous company’s compound, The Hub, for a decade, and placed a monitoring chip in her head without her consent. A trailer for the dark sci-fi comedy’s new season has arrived, and, unfortunately, Hazel isn’t free of Byron just yet.
Her father, Herbert, (Ray Romano) is dying and Byron has offered to use his boundless wealth and power to help find a cure — the only catch is Hazel and her dad have to move into The Hub. “My dad’s cancer is the only reason that I am here,” Hazel reminds her soon-to-be-ex. “The second he is better, we’re leaving.” Byron estimates that 12 weeks or so of cutting edge treatment is all Herbert will need.
In the meantime, Hazel takes a more proactive role at Gogol, although it’s unclear if Byron is coercing her into it. While testifying about the company before Congress, she denies having a chip in her head. The FBI is also watching Byron, hoping to finally nail him for his suspected “insurance fraud, labor conspiracy, [and] false imprisonment.” An undercover agent, Jay (Sarunas J. Jackson), whom Hazel first met and flirted with in Season 1, is dispatched to The Hub. “I believe you want to take him down just as bad as I do,” Jay tells Hazel.
“Made for Love” is based on Alissa Nutting’s novel of the same name. She created the series adaptation with Christina Lee (“Search Party”), Dean Bakopoulos (“Don’t Come Back from the Moon”), and Patrick Somerville (“Station Eleven”). Lee served as showrunner for Season 1, and is joined by Nutting for the new season.
Milioti’s best-known credits include “Palm Springs,” “Black Mirror,” and “How I Met Your Mother.” She received a Tony nod and Grammy award for her work in Broadway musical “Once.”
“Made for Love” returns April 28 on HBO Max.
