A teenage girl risks her life for a shot at a better future in “Panic,” an upcoming Amazon Prime YA drama. Based on Lauren Oliver’s novel of the same name, the series is set in a small Texas town that upholds a dangerous tradition: every summer the graduating seniors complete in a high-risk game for the chance to escape their hometown and build a better life for themselves. Last year, Panic led to two fatalities. This year, the game’s pot of money is larger than ever: the winner will take home $50,000.
“Every player has a story. Every player is hiding something,” we’re told in a new trailer for the show. The spot focuses on Heather (Olivia Welch, “Unbelievable”), who is convinced she needs to win Panic to in order to go to college. Besides confronting her darkest fears and risking death, Heather also has to worry about the possibility that the game is rigged. She suspects someone is trying to fix Panic — and no one knows the identity of the judges who organize the game.
Created, written by, and executive produced by Oliver, “Panic” drops on Amazon Prime Video May 28.
