A little girl grows up under the watchful eyes of a robo-mama in a new trailer for “I Am Mother.” “This facility was designed to give humanity a second chance. One that began with you, Daughter,” explains Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne). “The path will not be easy. The world outside is lifeless, but I made you into the woman you are so we could do this together.” Now a teenager, Daughter (Clara Rugaard) has been raised in isolation by Mother since birth and told that her destiny is to repopulate the earth in the wake of humankind’s extinction. She’s always asked questions, but Mother’s been able to answer them. Until the breach.
The spot depicts a woman from the outside world (Hilary Swank) stepping foot into the institute and destabilizing the world as Daughter knows it. There are people outside. This woman’s existence proves it. “That thing feels nothing for you,” the intruder says of Mother.
Rugaard’s credits include “Teen Spirit” and “The Lodge.” Two-time Oscar winner Swank just signed on to topline Netflix astronaut drama “Away.” “Instant Family,” “Peter Rabbit,” and “Juliet, Naked” are among Byrne’s recent credits.
“I Am Mother” made its world premiere at Sundance in January and hits Netflix June 7. Check out the trailer to see Mother and the newcomer waging war for Daughter’s trust.
