Kirsten Dunst finds herself struggling to protect her son and husband from the cruelty of her brother-in-law in “The Power of the Dog,” Jane Campion’s first feature in over a decade. Set in 1920s Montana, the Netflix Western sees a family cattle ranch becoming the site of psychological warfare and escalating drama. When Rose (Kirsten Dunst), a local widow, marries George (Jesse Plemons), his brother Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) doesn’t welcome her into the family with open arms. A new trailer for the awards contender shows the magnetic bully taking a special interest in terrorizing her son (Kodi Smit-McPhee), destroying the teen’s art and risking his life for the sake of humiliating him.
“He’s just a man,” Rose tells her son. “Only another man.” But she seems increasingly affected by Phil’s mind games.
Campion most recently worked on “Top of the Lake,” an Emmy-winning BBC Two/Sundance Channel murder mystery series led by Elisabeth Moss. She is one of seven women to ever receive a Best Director nod at the Oscars. She was recognized for “The Piano,” for which she won Best Original Screenplay. With “The Piano,” Campion became the first woman director to take home Cannes Film Festival’s most prestigious prize, the Palme d’Or. Julia Ducournau followed in Campion’s footsteps: her second feature, “Titane,” won the Palme d’Or at this year’s fest.
“Holy Smoke” and “Sweetie” are among Campion’s other features.
“The Power of the Dog” made its world premiere at Venice Film Festival. It hits select theaters November 17 and Netflix December 1.
