An investigation into the life and death of disgraced tycoon Jeffrey Epstein, Lisa Bryant’s upcoming four-part Netflix docuseries “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich” also spotlights a failed justice system and Epstein’s accusers, some of whom are sharing their stories for the first time.
A new trailer for the project sees Epstein described as a “Gatsby-like figure of mystery” who was “stunningly rich.” His money, power, and influence helped grow his international sex trafficking ring, an “ever-revolving door of underage girls.”
After making a secret plea with the government in 2008 to avoid a potential life sentence — a deal described in the trailer as “one of the biggest failures of the criminal justice system” — Epstein resumed his life as a serial sexual abuser until his arrest in July 2019. He was found dead in his jail cell one month later, and while the medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, many are convinced it was a cover-up. “Did he kill himself or was he killed?” the docuseries asks.
According to Netflix’s synopsis of “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich,” Epstein’s accusers are “the leading voices” in the docuseries. The “sisterhood of survivors intend to stop predators — and the American justice system — from silencing the next generation,” promo materials note. The trailer sees survivors demanding justice. “He’s dead but he did not act alone. None of them have been held accountable,” we’re told. A survivor warns, “The monsters are still out there. You took our freedom, now we’re going to take yours.”
“Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich” premieres on Netflix May 27.
