Trailer Watch: Jessica Williams Is “Friggin’ Dope” in “The Incredible Jessica James”

“The Incredible Jessica James”

“I’m 25 and I’m sort of in this weird transitional phase,” explains Jessica (Jessica Williams) in a new trailer for “The Incredible Jessica James.” The aspiring playwright is dealing with a recent breakup and back on the dating scene while her friends are on the path to motherhood. “The ABCs of Subverting the Patriarchal Paradigm?” asks a pregnant woman as she accepts Jessica’s present to her unborn baby. “It’s never too soon to start questioning the system,” Jessica says, proudly explaining why she chose the book.

It seems like her new love interest, recently divorced Boone (Chris O’Dowd), is right to observe that Jessica is a “very complicated person.” But according to him, that’s nothing to apologize for. And Jessica realizes she has a lot going for her. “Of course you [like me]. Everybody does. I’m friggin’ dope!” Jessica tells him.

Williams made history as the youngest correspondent to ever join “The Daily Show.” She left the late-night series to pursue other projects. Her other credits include “People Places Things,” “Girls,” and “Just for Kicks.” She has a development deal with Comedy Central and, along with Phoebe Robinson (“White Guy Talk Show”), hosts “2 Dope Queens,” a popular podcast.

“The Incredible Jessica James” hits Netflix July 28. The comedy re-teams Williams with “People Places Things” writer-director Jim Strouse. He wrote “The Incredible Jessica James” as a starring vehicle for Williams. “While I was in the edit room for ‘People Places Things,’ I kept telling people that I can’t wait till she stars in her own movie. I just decided to get a jump on it and wrote one for her,” he said when the project was first announced.

You can catch “The Incredible Jessica James” on Netflix beginning July 28.
