Jessie Buckley won’t let an ankle monitor, curfew, or small minds get in the way of her dreams in “Wild Rose.” A trailer for the Scotland-set drama sees aspiring country singer Rose-Lynn (Buckley) coming to terms with her past and working towards a different future. Recently released from prison, the single mom is rebuilding her relationships with her young children and working as a housekeeper when she finds a fan in her boss (Sophie Okonedo), who hears her sing and vows to get her to Nashville despite overwhelming odds.
Not everyone wants Rose-Lynn to pursue music. Her mom (Julie Walters) fears that she’ll cast off her kids and let them down when she’s busy trying to make something of herself. Rose-Lynn is also dealing with the stigma of her stint in jail. Before she takes the stage at a bar she’s told that “no one wants to see a convicted criminal up there.” “Johnny Cash is a convicted criminal, ya ballbag,” she responds.
For Rose-Lynn, country music is “recording the truth” and getting “whatever is in there out.” And she’s determined to do just that.
“The Woman in White,” “Taboo,” and “War & Peace” are among Buckley’s credits.
“Wild Rose” opens in LA and NY June 14. Nicole Taylor (“Three Girls”) penned the script.
