Emotional detachment is a career advantage for journalists and photographers, but less welcome within the demanding confines of domestic life.
That’s what war photographer Rebecca (Juliette Binoche) begins to discover in the career-versus-motherhood drama A Thousand Times Goodnight. Her husband Marcus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) doesn’t mince words about her wandering eye: “You come home and we’re happy, but all the time you’re just waiting for that next shot…. These kids can’t live in constant fear that their mother’s gonna die.”
Interestingly, director Erik Poppe reportedly based part of the film on his own experiences as a foreign photojournalist in the 1980s.
A Thousand Times Goodnight will open in the UK and Ireland on May 2 and is expected to open in the US this fall.
