Kate Nash doesn’t want insecurities or a sexist industry to stand between girls and their dreams. “If you’re a girl and you’re interested in music then please don’t shy away from it because you feel like you’re not good enough. Just do it,” the musician and “GLOW” star says in a new trailer for “Kate Nash: Underestimate the Girl.” Directed by Amy Goldstein (“The Hooping Life”), the doc revisits the British star’s breakout success and her decision to transform her career — risking it all in the process.
“They worked me like a donkey and I sold over a million records,” Nash recalls. “When I look back at my career now, I was just not ready for what happened to me.” The overnight pop star’s first record, “Made of Bricks,” peaked at Number 1 in the UK. What Nash really wanted to do was make punk rock music — a decision that didn’t sit well with her label. They dropped her.
Nash decided to say “fuck it” and make her own songs the way she wanted to make them. “I want to eradicate the misconception that female is a genre because it isn’t,” she emphasizes in the spot.
“Yesterday Was Forever,” Nash’s most recent album, dropped in 2018. She stars in Netflix’s critically acclaimed wrestling dramedy “GLOW,” which has been renewed for a fourth and final season by the streamer.
“Kate Nash: Underestimate the Girl” screened at at IDFA, DOC NYC, and LA Film Festival, and will be available on virtual cinema platform Alamo on Demand May 22. “There will be a special interactive performance and Q&A with Nash on May 23 6pm PST / 9pm EST,” Deadline details. The doc will have a limited traditional theatrical release in August.
