Kate Winslet is eyeing another Emmy. It’s been 10 years since her last major TV role, HBO period drama “Mildred Pierce,” and she’s returning to the premium cable network with “Mare of Easttown,” a mystery set in small-town Pennsylvania. A trailer for the series introduces Mare Sheehan (Winslet), AKA Lady Hawk, a detective responsible for the proudest moment in Easttown sports history.
The former basketball star’s life is crumbling around her as she begins to investigate a local murder. Considered a hero in her community but convinced she’s a fool, Mare is haunted by the feeling that she’s not good enough to be the person others want her to be. Her daughter is so used to being disappointed by her mom that she urges Mare’s new co-worker to “lower [his] expectations.”
Mare battles self-doubt as she works the murder case that’s destroying her community. “I want to find out everything,” she says. “Everything.”
Winslet won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for “Mildred Pierce.” A seven-time Oscar nominee, she took home the prize for “The Reader.” Her upcoming projects include “Avatar 2” and “Lee,” Ellen Kuras’ biopic of war photographer Lee Israel. She was last seen in “Ammonite.”
“Mare of Easttown” debuts on HBO April 18.
