“History isn’t here yet. It’s coming, but maybe this time we can take it on our own terms,” says King Lu (Orion Lee) in the first trailer for Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow.” Set in the early 19th century in Oregon Territory, the drama sees the Chinese immigrant finding a connection — and forming a business — with Cookie (John Magaro), a skilled cook who hasn’t stopped moving since his parents’ death.
The ambitious friends identify an opportunity in the form of preparing baked goods for hungry fur trappers desperate for familiar food, but as King observes, “it’s the getting started that’s the puzzle — no way for a poor man to start.” For their business to operate, they need to steal milk from a wealthy landowner’s milking cow.
Reichardt most recently wrote and directed 2016’s “Certain Women.” Her other features include “Night Moves,” “Wendy and Lucy,” and “Old Joy.”
“First Cow” premiered at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival to strong reviews The film opens in theaters March 6. Reichardt co-wrote the script with Jonathan Raymond
