Trailer Watch: Kerry Washington Can See Right Through Reese Witherspoon in “Little Fires Everywhere”

"Little Fires Everywhere"

“I have always had the best intentions,” claims Reese Witherspoon in a new trailer for “Little Fires Everywhere.” The fact that someone burns her house down while she’s inside it suggests that not everyone agrees with her self-assessment. An adaptation of Celeste Ng’s bestseller of the same name, the Hulu drama sees Witherspoon playing Elena, a journalist and mother of four fixated on projecting a perfect outward appearance to the world, even if it comes at the expense of her closest relationships. Elena’s view of the world — and herself — is challenged when an artist and her daughter arrive in her affluent town and bring Elena’s deeply repressed rage up to the surface.

Elena rents Mia (Kerry Washington) and Pearl (Lexi Underwood) an apartment below market value and offers the former a job as her “house manager,” which she deems a less patronizing title than “maid.” “It’s a beautiful thing to know that your actions can affect another person’s life,” a self-congratulatory Elena tells her family.

Mia suspects that Elena’s gestures are anything but selfless. The photographer is convinced that her new employer is doing good for the sake of making herself feel and look good — she’s not actually invested in Mia or Pearl.

Pearl befriends Elena’s kids and Elena’s youngest child, a rebel who constantly butts heads with her mom, finds herself drawn to Mia, who encourages her to stand up to Elena.

We see a rattled Elena becoming convinced that Mia has “infiltrated [their] lives,” and she vows to “figure out who this woman is” — an investigation that will lead to life-changing consequences for both families.

A two-time Oscar nominee, Witherspoon won for “Walk the Line” and received a nom for “Wild.” She received an Emmy nod for acting in “Big Little Lies” and won an Emmy for exec producing the HBO murder mystery. She was last seen in Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” which she also exec produced.

Washington scored two Emmy nods for her starring role in “Scandal.” She also landed a nomination for her portrayal of Anita Hill in “Confirmation” and for exec producing the HBO TV movie. Washington recently starred in and exec produced Netflix drama “American Son.”

“Little Fires Everywhere” premieres March 18. Witherspoon and Washington are among its exec producers. Liz Tigelaar (“Casual”) serves as showrunner. Lynn Shelton (“Sword of Trust”) directed two eps.
