Kerry Washington’s stuck inside a living nightmare in a new teaser for “American Son.” The Netflix feature sees the “Scandal” alumna playing Kendra, a mother desperate to locate her 18-year-old son, who goes missing after a traffic stop. She hasn’t seen or heard from him since the night before.
The spot shows Kendra and her estranged ex (Steven Pasquale) reuniting at a Miami police station, where they’re being asked questions and refused answers by authorities.
“There was an incident. That is all I can tell you,” a police officer tells Kendra. “Not acceptable,” she responds, demanding to know where her son is.
The officer, who is white, mentions that he has kids too, implying that he can empathize with her fears. “Any of them black?” Kendra asks.
Washington received Emmy nods for her roles in “Scandal” and “Confirmation” and for exec producing the latter. She’ll star alongside Reese Witherspoon in “Little Fires Everywhere,” Hulu’s adaptation of Celeste Ng’s best-selling novel of the same name. Washington’s also set to topline “24-7” with Eva Longoria, who is directing the workplace comedy.
“American Son” is based on the play of the same name, which Washington also starred in. The drama made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month and hits Netflix November 1.
