Trailer Watch: Kitty Green Returns to the Scene of the Crime in “Casting JonBenet”

“Casting JonBenet”

The 1996 murder of six-year-old American beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey made international headlines, but the horrifying crime undoubtedly made the most lasting mark in Boulder, Colorado, where Ramsey’s life was taken. “It was the biggest thing to happen to Boulder in a very long time,” says one of “Casting JonBenet’s” interviewees in a new trailer for the Netflix documentary.

Filmmaker Kitty Green returned to Boulder two decades after the infamous homicide “to audition local actors, unpacking how each remembers and relates to the ill-fated Ramsey family,” the film’s official synopsis details. “A darkly moving exploration of crime, guilt, and personal bias, ‘Casting JonBenet’ expertly blurs the lines between documentary and drama.”

The trailer includes performances from locals who are in character as well as some speculation about who murdered Ramsey. “In cases like that, it’s always somebody you know,” one woman who is auditioning says. Another adds, “The mother had to do it.” Others blame Ramsey’s father and brother.

Green’s previous credits include “Ukraine Is Not a Brothel” and “The Face of Ukraine: Casting Oksana Baiul,” the latter of which received Sundance’s 2015 Short Film Jury Award: Non-fiction.

When we asked Green to share some advice for other women directors, she said to “stick with women.” “It is true that the film industry can be a bit of a boys’ club, and as a young female, you can’t just ‘hang out’ with the boys freely,” she observed. “My advice is to seek out the strongest women in the industry any way you can, as the most powerful women will often go out of their way to help you. I’ve had some really inspiring women support my [films].”

“Casting JonBenet” made its world premiere at Sundance in January and will begin streaming on Netflix April 28.
