Living at Barbary Lane is a life-changing experience for its queer residents. A new trailer for Netflix’s “Tales of the City” revival emphasizes how the house in San Francisco is “more than an apartment” and its landlady, Anna (Olympia Dukakis), makes people feel “seen” in a way they never have before.
“Everything that made me me came from Barbary Lane,” says Shawna (Ellen Page). But an unexpected visitor seems poised to make Shawna rethink her identity.
Twenty years after leaving her family behind to pursue her career, Shawna’s estranged mother, Mary Ann (Laura Linney), is returning to Barbary Lane. Shawna believes Mary Ann to be her biological mother. She is not. Mary Ann wants to tell Shawna the truth, but Anna is of the mind that “sometimes the truth is a burden you have to carry alone.”
Inspired by the books of Armistead Maupin, “Tales of the City” hits Netflix June 7. Lauren Morelli (“Orange Is the New Black”) serves as showrunner. The original “Tales of the City” was one of the first mainstream series to depict the LGBTQ community on-screen. During its run it netted two GLAAD awards, a Peabody, and several Emmy nominations.
