Trailer Watch: Lena Waithe Tells the Story of an Aspiring TV Writer in BET’s “Twenties”

"Twenties"

Hattie (Jonica “JoJo” T. Gibbs, “Good Trouble”) is on her way to her destiny — but there are plenty of obstacles along the way. Recently evicted and desperate to avoid a stressful 9 to 5 job that’s going to take her away from her passion, the aspiring writer accepts a gig as a writers’ PA on a TV series. “Twenties” tells her story. A trailer just dropped for the upcoming BET series.

Inspired by Emmy winner Lena Waithe’s web series of the same name, “Twenties” sees Hattie and her BFFs, Marie (Christina Elmore, “The Last Ship”), a film exec, and Nia (Gabrielle Graham, “On the Basis of Sex”), a yoga instructor, navigating personal and professional drama in their 20s.

Hattie hopes that working as a writers’ PA will help her learn to be a writer, but she’s constantly reminded that her job is to make other people’s lives easier. No one cares about her writing — they just want her to get coffee orders right and to speak only when spoken to.

“What if we made sure our ideas were heard? What if we took up space?” Marie asks, to mixed reactions.

Hattie is making history as BET’s first queer female lead.

Waithe won an Emmy for co-writing “Master of None’s” “Thanksgiving” episode, which was inspired by her own coming out process. She created”The Chi” and “Boomerang.” The former is returning for a third season on Showtime and the latter a second on BET. Neither have premiere dates yet. Waithe penned the script for “Queen & Slim,” in theaters now. Melina Matsoukas’ feature directorial debut  follows a black couple who go on the run after killing a police officer in self-defense.

“Twenties” will debut on BET in early 2020.
