It’s bad bitch o’clock: the trailer for HBO’s “Love, Lizzo” has dropped. The doc offers insight into the life, career, and work ethic of the inimitable singer-rapper as never seen before. “It took so much hard work to get to where I am today,” the “Truth Hurts” singer, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, reflects. “But I found my voice. Now when people see me on stage, they see themselves.”
“Love, Lizzo,” contains three year’s worth of footage collected during the Cuz I Love You world tour as well as the recording of her fourth studio album “Special,” released this July. “This intimate documentary allows the multi-platinum artist to get candid about body positivity, self-love, and recognizing Black women for their contributions,” the film’s synopsis details. “Every once in a while, an artist changes not only music, but culture as well. Lizzo has done both. This is the journey of a trailblazing superstar who has become the movement the world desperately needed just by being herself.”
With archival home videos as well as behind the scenes footage, the doc chronicles Lizzo’s journey from her beginnings as a classically trained flutist from Houston to a chart-topping global star.
The trailer sees Lizzo recounting the discrimination she faced as a nascent artist trying to break into the industry. “Nobody was trying to sign a fat, Black girl that rapped, sang, and played the flute,” she explains. Despite these hindrances, it was her craft – and Lizzo’s undying devotion to it – that always acted as her lodestar. “No matter what part of my story you come in at, I’m always chasing the music,” she emphasizes. “Y’all have no idea how close I was to this not being a thing.”
Among other awards, Lizzo has three Grammys to her name: Best Urban Contemporary Album for “Cuz I Love You,” Best Solo Pop Performance for “Truth Hurts,” and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Jermone.” As an actress, Lizzo has also appeared in “Hustlers,” Lorene Scafaria’s 2019 crime drama about strippers who con their Wall Street clientele.
“Love, Lizzo” will be available on HBO Max November 24.
