Trailer Watch: Madeleine Sims-Fewer Seeks Revenge in Psychological Thriller “Violation”

"Violation"

“You created a reality that is completely different from everyone else’s, where you’re this saint who gets tricked into doing bad things,” a woman tells her sister in “Violation.” A trailer has arrived for Madeleine Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli’s revenge thriller, which sees two sisters’ reunion derailed by a betrayal.

The clip is sparse on plot details, but heavy on tension. It seems something happens to Greta (Anna Maguire), something she’s afraid to share with her sister Miriam (Sims-Fewer). “I have to tell you something and I don’t want you to freak out,” Greta says to Miriam. “It’s about Dylan [her husband], okay? Don’t get angry.”

But Miriam does just that. “Believing her only recourse is to exact revenge, Miriam takes extreme action,” a press release for “Violation” hints, “but the price of retribution is high, and she is not prepared for the toll it takes as she begins to emotionally and psychologically unravel.”

“The idea of revenge against the people who have wronged us is very seductive. That’s why revenge films are so popular. But what if the person who hurts you is not some stranger in a dark alleyway, but someone close to you?” Sims-Fewer said in an interview with Women and Hollywood. “No one is really talking about this in films about revenge, but I’m very much drawn to the more complicated side of the story — like the version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ where she can’t take being on land, and realizes that leaving her home for a man was a big mistake, so she throws herself back into the sea and drowns. Morbid, yeah, but far more interesting.”

“Violation” premiered at TIFF 2020, where Sims-Fewer took home a Rising Star award. It screened at Sundance last month and has also played at Vancouver International Film Festival.

Sims-Fewer previously helmed shorts “Slap Happy,” “Woman in Stall,” and “Chubby” with Mancinelli. Also an actor, her on-screen work includes “The Expanse” and “Operation Avalanche.”

“Violation” will be available on Shudder March 25.
