“I just feel like he’s here with us. That was Seth’s power — he got us lost in our own minds,” says Malin Akerman in a new trailer for “The Aviary.” The thriller sees the “Billions” alumna playing Jillian, a woman fleeing a dangerous cult alongside a fellow member, Blair (Lorenza Izzo, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels”). To reach the nearest town, the pair will need to spend two days traversing the harsh, isolated New Mexican desert.
The women can’t quite shake the feeling that the cult’s leader, Seth (Chris Messina, “The Sinner”), is following them. “Why do you keep talking like him?” Jillian asks Blair. Besides seizing the cult members’ phones and laptops, Seth used mind control techniques on them, further cementing his powerful influence.
“With supplies dwindling and their senses failing, Jillian and Blair are faced with a horrifying question: how do you run from an enemy who lives inside your head?” the film’s synopsis teases.
Written and directed by the creators of YouTube Red’s “12 Deadly Days,” Jennifer Raite and Chris Cullari, “The Aviary” hits theaters, digital, and on demand April 29.
