“You know what a harlequin is?” asks Margot Robbie in the first trailer for “Birds of Prey.” ” A harlequin’s role is to serve. It’s nothing without a master. No one gives two shits who we are beyond that.”
“The Suicide Squad” spinoff sees Harley Quinn (Robbie) venturing out on her own and reassessing her identity after she and the Joker (Jared Leto) break up. “I wanted a fresh start,” she explains, “but it turned out I wasn’t the only dame in Gotham looking for emancipation.”
When Harley realizes that she and a group of women share a mutual enemy, she suggests that they band together to take him down. Lots of violence — and possibly pizza parties — ensue.
Robbie received an Oscar nomination for “I, Tonya.” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” and “Mary Queen of Scots” are among her most recent credits. Her upcoming projects include “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig’s live-action story based on the iconic doll, and “Marian,” an action pic about Maid Marian from Robin Hood folklore.
“Birds of Prey” is written by Christina Hodson (“Bumblebee”) and directed by Cathy Yan (“Dead Pigs”). The pic hits theaters February 7. Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Ella Jay Basco co-star.
