Unlikely friends form a life-changing bond in a new trailer for Martha Stephens’ “To the Stars.” Set in 1960s rural Oklahoma, the coming-of-age pic centers on Iris (Kara Hayward, “Haters Back Off!”), a reclusive farmer’s daughter, and Maggie (Liana Liberato, “Light as a Feather”), her magnetic new classmate from Kansas City.
Despite being warned by the popular kids to stay away from Iris, Maggie takes a shine to her. “I don’t care if people like me,” Iris tells an unfazed Maggie, who is more intent on building a relationship with her new friend than fitting in at her new school. The spot hints that Maggie is, however, invested in keeping secrets from her past hidden.
Stephens’ previous credits include “Passenger Pigeons,” “Pilgrim Song” and “Land Ho!”
When we asked Stephens what she hopes audiences will think about after seeing “To the Stars” she said, “Since a portion of the story is open-ended, I hope the audience is left discussing and debating the future and fate of the characters.”
“To the Stars” made its world premiere at Sundance 2019. Shannon Bradley-Colleary penned its script. The film will be released on digital April 24.
