Can one “terrible sin” define your life? The titular character of “Diane” seems to be worried that’s the case. Diane’s (Mary Kay Place) days are filled volunteering at a soup kitchen, visiting sick friends, and keeping tabs on her drug-addicted son. But the do-gooder is haunted by her past. A newly released trailer for the drama sees Diane reckoning with mysterious “damage” she’s done in her life.
“I just want to know for once and for all, do you forgive me or not?” she asks a woman in the hospital. “I forgave you but I haven’t forgotten,” she’s told.
It’s unclear what Diane is atoning for, but it is clear that she’s struggling to find peace. “You take the time, get yourself together, and come out when you’re good and ready,” a friend advises.
“The Big Chill,” “Big Love,” and “Lady Dynamite” are among Place’s previous credits.
“Diane” premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and took home the Best Narrative Feature award among other prizes. You can catch it in NY and LA beginning March 29. A national rollout will follow.
