A fateful meeting with a charismatic stranger leads Maya Hawke on a path to internet stardom in Gia Coppola’s “Mainstream.” Unsure of what she wants to do and what kind of art she’d like to make, Frankie (Hawke) finds a sense of direction when she starts making YouTube videos with Link (Andrew Garfield).

The collaborators make videos inspired by “guys who do and say nothing and promote a lifestyle of doing and saying nothing.” Fully committing to the role, Link asks the camera, “Why is my existence so lit?”

What initially seems like a critique of viral celebrity takes a turn when the collaborators have the potential to “go stratospheric.” Frankie begins to wonder if Link has told her “one single thing that is true.”

“Stranger Things” and BBC’s “Little Women” are among Hawke’s credits.

Coppola made her feature directorial debut with 2013’s “Palo Alto,” a coming-of-age drama led by Emma Roberts.

“Mainstream” made its world premiere at last year’s Venice Film Festival and hits select theaters, digital platforms, and VOD May 7. Coppola penned the script with Tom Stuart.
