Trailer Watch: Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer Are Superheroes in “Thunder Force”

"Thunder Force": Hopper Stone/ Netflix

Just this week photos leaked from the set of “Thor: Love and Thunder” providing a peek at Melissa McCarthy in costume for the highly anticipated Marvel title, but we won’t have to wait until the blockbuster drops to catch the “Bridesmaids” breakout testing out her superpowers. A trailer has arrived for “Thunder Force,” a Netflix comedy that sees McCarthy teaming up with Octavia Spencer. The pair play estranged friends who reunite under extraordinary circumstances.

The spot kicks off with Lydia (McCarthy) visiting her old pal Emily’s (Spencer) state-of-the-art office. “I’ve been developing a genetic platform that will allow us to give ordinary people superpowers,” Emily details.

Warned not to touch anything when Emily leaves the room, Lydia touches everything and accidentally initiates a treatment on herself. “You just took our only formula for super strength,” a horrified Emily explains. “Everything about you will become stronger.”

Emily has a superpower as well: invisibility.

The tag-team decide to “see what these powers can really do” and interrupt a convenience store robbery with mixed results.

Lydia and Emily — AKA Thunder Force — hope to make a positive difference in their city, but they have their work cut out for them. “For the first time in history, we’re seeing real life superheroes fighting crime — but we’re also seeing a new kind of criminal,” a newscaster announces.

One particular criminal (Bobby Cannavale) has his eyes on Thunderforce. “How can we not stop two chicks in their 40s?” he asks.

A two-time Oscar nominee, Spencer took home the honor for “The Help.” She received an Emmy nod last year for “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker.” She’s reprising her lead role in the second season of AppleTV+’s “Truth Be Told,” but a premiere date hasn’t been announced for the crime drama yet.

McCarthy is also a two-time Oscar nominee: she’s landed noms for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and “Bridesmaids.” “Superintelligence” and “The Kitchen” are among her most recent credits.

“Thunder Force” hits Netflix April 9.
