As the first film to boast Melissa McCarthy’s writing credits, Tammy already made our Most Anticipated Films of 2014 list back in January. We’re not entirely cool with the premise that Susan Sarandon will play McCarthy’s boozy grandmother — Sarandon shouldn’t be shuffled into Betty White roles just yet — but given that McCarthy will star and her husband Ben Falcone will direct, the road-trip comedy looks like a tailor-made vehicle for the Bridesmaid and The Heat co-star’s strengths.
Perhaps that’s why this 1:30 teaser trailer is a perfect short film. The premise is simple: Tammy psyches herself up to rob a burger joint to Coolio’s “Gangster Paradise” (a song that’s now old enough that its ironic appropriation isn’t annoying anymore), attempts to menace the behind-the-counter workers, and is hampered by the greasy fast-food bag over her head. Maybe it’s just the coincidental convergence with Shia LeBeouf’s current art stunt (also involving a dope in a brown paper bag), but the sight of McCarthy trying to be appear intimidating by penning in angry brows over her eye holes cracked me up.
Tammy will be released on July 2. Watch the teaser trailer below:
