Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss’ reputations precede them in a new trailer for “The Kitchen.” “You girls have been very busy,” says a mob boss greeting the trio. Moments later he threatens to wipe them off the face of the earth.
Set in 1978 Hell’s Kitchen, “The Kitchen” sees the women struggling to make ends meet as their husbands serve time in jail. Despite being assured that they’d be taken care of, they can’t make rent and are left wondering what they’re going to do. Sick and tired of being underestimated and undervalued, Kathy (McCarthy), Ruby (Haddish), and Claire (Moss) decide to take matters into their own hands by making their mark on the criminal underworld.
“All these men working these streets and not a solid set of balls anywhere,” Ruby observes. This can-do attitude — and a refusal to go back to the way things were — gets the women far fast. Their newfound power also makes them a target of powerful mobsters.
“The Kitchen” marks Andrea Berloff’s feature directorial debut. She also penned the script. Best known for co-writing the Oscar-nominated screenplay for “Straight Outta Compton,” her other writing credits include “World Trade Center” and “Sleepless.”
You can catch “The Kitchen” in theaters August 9.
