In a new trailer for the English-language remake of Susanne Bier’s “After the Wedding,” Michelle Williams’ Isabel has spent her life working with children in a Calcutta orphanage. When a mysterious grant promises support, Isabel returns to New York to meet the benefactor, Theresa (Julianne Moore), who is in the middle of wedding arrangements for her daughter (Abby Quinn). When Isabel recognizes Theresa’s husband (Billy Crudup) at the wedding, a mystery begins to unravel.
“I don’t trust your wife,” Isabel tells Crudup’s character, Oscar, questioning the motives behind Theresa’s grant. “$20 million? What does she want?”
Written and directed by Moore’s husband, Bart Freundlich, this retelling of Bier’s revered 2006 film reimagines the leads as two women.
Moore’s won an Oscar for her role as an Alzheimer’s patient in “Still Alice.” She’ll portray feminist icon Gloria Steinem in biopic “The Glorias: A Life On The Road.”
Williams has received Oscar nods for “Brokeback Mountain,” “Manchester By the Sea,” “Blue Valentine,” and “My Week With Marilyn.” She won a Golden Globe for the latter. She is attached to play singer Janis Joplin in biopic “Janis” and astronaut Christa McAuliffe in “The Challenger.”
“After the Wedding” premiered at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. It will open in New York and LA on August 9.
