“I’m as ready as a person can be,” says Cassius Clay (Eli Goree) in a new trailer for “One Night in Miami…” Regina King’s feature directorial debut takes place on February 25, 1964, and sees the iconic athlete, later known as Muhammad Ali, being crowned as the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion and celebrating his win alongside other legends: human rights activist and Black nationalist supporter Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), football star Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), and music sensation Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.).
Inspired by true events and based on Kemp Powers’ play of the same name, the drama follows the foursome as they imagine a world where they will be safe to be themselves and think like they want “without having to answer to anybody.” As Malcolm X explains, “Tonight is a chance for us to reflect.”
King won an Oscar for her supporting role in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” She took home an Emmy last year for her leading role in HBO’s “Watchmen.” A four-time Emmy winner, she also scored statuettes for “Seven Seconds” and two for “American Crime.” Her directing credits include “Insecure,” “This Is Us,” and “Scandal.”
“One Night in Miami…” made its world premiere at Venice Film Festival and has since screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival, and London Film Festival, among others. The awards hopeful starts streaming on Prime Video January 15.
