“Why don’t you have anyone?” Natascha McElhone is asked in a new trailer for “Carmen.” From writer-director Valerie Buhagiar, the pic, set in 1980s Malta, tells the story of a woman who has lived her life for someone else. Since she was 16, Carmen (McElhone) has devoted all of her time and energy to serving her older brother, a priest. When he dies, she struggles to make sense of her new place in the world.
The spot hints that Carmen steals money from the parish to help support herself. She also finds love.
“The Truman Show” and “Californication” are among McElhone’s best known credits. Her more recent projects include “Halo” and “Hotel Portofino.”
Buhagiar’s features include “It’s Hard to Be Human” and “The Anniversary.”
Based on a true story, “Carmen” will hit theaters and VOD September 23.
