Trailer Watch: Natasha Lyonne Can’t Escape Her Birthday Party, or Death, in “Russian Doll”

"Russian Doll"

“Let’s fuck this party in the mouth,” announces Natasha Lyonne in the first trailer for “Russian Doll.” The upcoming Netflix comedy sees the “Orange Is the New Black” star playing Nadia, a New Yorker who has made carpe diem her guiding principle. She realizes that life’s short and wants to make the most of it. If her birthday celebration is any indication, she figures the best way to do so is to take a shitload of drugs. “What I do with my time is my business, my choice, baby,” she says.

Nadia is having the time of her life — until she’s hit by a car and dies. Suddenly, she’s traveled back in time and at her birthday party once more. But then she dies again. “Russian Doll” depicts Nadia’s never-ending night. No matter what she does at the party and afterwards, she ends up dying in a tragic accident. It’s not long before she’s questioning her own sanity and is sent to a psych ward — only to die en route to the hospital.

Lyonne co-created “Russian Doll” with Amy Poehler and “Sleeping with Other People” writer-director Leslye Headland, who all serve as exec producers. The series features an all-female writing and directing team. Lyonne, Headland, and Jamie Babbit (“Girls,” “Addicted to Fresno”) helmed every episode.

“Russian Doll” debuts on Netflix February 1. The series’ cast includes Greta Lee (“KTown”), Yul Vazquez (“Captain Phillips”), and Elizabeth Ashley (“Ocean’s 8”).
