Two desperate women plot to escape their abusive marriages in “No Ordinary Love,” Chyna Robinson’s feature debut. “My inspiration for this romantic thriller came as I interviewed 23 women about their toxic relationships and their courageous decisions to get out,” Robinson told us.
A trailer for the American Black Film Festival pic sees Elizabeth (April Hartman) confiding in her preacher husband (Eric Hanson) about a church member, Tanya (DeAna Davis). When Elizabeth expresses concern about how Tanya’s husband (Lynn Andrews III) treats her, he tells her that it’s in the “best interest for both of them that she’s as obedient to him as possible while he’s going through this phase.” He’s convinced that “the more respect you show a man, the more love he will give in return.” Cue the red flags.
Elizabeth and Tanya are both being abused by their husbands, but neither is able to acknowledge the extent of their mistreatment. Elizabeth says she “can’t just walk out on a marriage.” Tanya blames herself for her husband’s transformation from a “patient” and “gentle” person. “I just can’t figure out what I did to change him so much,” she says.
Eventually, the women realize they need to find a way out.
“I want people to think about how they don’t know what another person’s lived experience is, and to pause before judging someone’s situation. Things aren’t always what they seem,” Robinson told us.
“No Ordinary Love” will be available on VOD June 15.
